Mobile and New Year’s Eve 2014

We decided to keep our theme of going to new places for this final trip of the year. It took a while to pick the right place, since the numbers of major US cities we have not visited are becoming scant few. We decided on Mobile because it was an easy drive and Zach wanted to see the USS Alabama.

Our first morning we went south of the city to Bellingrath Gardens,

and Dauphin Island where we visited Fort Gaines

the Estuarium of the Dauphin Island Sea Lab,

and the pier with no water.

The next morning we went on the tour of the USS Alabama,

 Submarine USS Drum,

 and aviation museum.

That afternoon we walked the streets of downtown Mobile and

found some of the artwork on the Oyster Trail.

On the evening of the 31st, we went to Moon Pie over Mobile, New Year’s Eve celebration. It was the first time we ever went out for New Year’s Eve. Mobile originated Mardi Gras and Moon Pies are a big part of it, thus Moon Pie New Year’s Eve.

We sampled Moon Pie Moonshine and

ate a piece of the largest Moon Pie ever.

We had to stay for the Moon Pie drop at midnight to welcome in the New Year. The Village people we the featured performers.
