Newport, Mystic and Clearwater Beach 2015

We were going to our niece, Patricia’s wedding in CT; so, we decided to do a side trip to Newport and Mystic. This was Zach’s first trip to these three states. He has now been to all states except, Wyoming, Montana and Idaho. We will be visiting those soon!

We flew to Philly, planning to stay with Mike and Nancy and go to the beach. The weather was cold and rainy so we went to AC instead. The weather was so lousy we just stayed in one casino, Tropicana.

The next day the four of us drove to the wedding near Hartford, CT. Since we were driving up the day before, we went to the USMA, West Point.

Saturday was wedding day. Nice wedding and reception!

The next day we drove to Newport. We did the Viking Trolley Tours of the city and the tour of The Breakers. After that we walked on Thames St and the Wharf area looking for a good chowder and dinner place.  We did not find good chowder at the place we picked; however, we found good chowder at Mystic Pizza the next day!

Monday morning we did the entire Cliff Walk and Bellevue Ave. We went by so many mansions and took so many pictures we don’t know which were which.

That afternoon we went to the Submarine Force Museum and USS Nautilus in Groton. The Nautilus, the first nuclear-powered sub is the main attraction.

After that we went to Mystic and had chowder and a pizza at the Mystic Pizza and walked around town.

We spent a good part of the next day in Mystic Seaport, a very interesting historical place set to be an 18th century whaling port with the actual building and ships from those day. One of its major goals is the restoration and preservation of wooden ships. The Charles W. Morgan, a whaler, and the Joseph Conrad are two of their main ships.

Later that day we drove to Philly. We spent the next day, Wednesday with grandson, Jesse. We went to the Independence Seaport Museum, which included the Warship Olympia and Submarine Becuna.

We had a Philly Cheesesteak and beer at Jim’s Steaks on South St. After getting our cheesesteaks, we went to sit. Cathy suddenly realized her and Jenn came her when Jenn was at Westchester.

That evening we flew home. A few days later we drove to Clearwater Beach to visit our friends Ron and Irmi.
