Outer Banks 2019

Day 1 Saturday

Left early am for our 1st ever trip to Outer Banks. Our 1st stop was Washington, NC. It was 500 miles and was "smooth sailing". No traffic issues at all. Only saw one police car the entire way. They must have been taking a break after the big speeding crackdown operation in the Southeast this week.

Went for short walk on Pamlico River Walk. Much nicer than we expected.

Had some houses built in 1790's.

Day 2

Walked out of our hotel and discovered a flat tire; new tires too. Walked to a gas station, bought some "Fix-a-flat", so, we could drive to a repair shop and get the tire fixed.

The only car repair place in the whole town of Washington that was open was the Walmart. They got to our tire as soon as possible, putting it ahead of other cars; but, we still ended up waiting at the Walmart for several hours. Then they couldn't find a hole or nail or anything, so, the "Fix-a-flat" must have worked pretty good.

We arrived at the Outer Banks at 1pm and drove to the Wright Brothers National Monument. Very interesting  to visit the spot of the first flight. It was only 120 ft long and lasted 12 seconds. That was in 1903. Amazing where we are now!

After that we checked into our 1st ever Airbnb.

From there we went to Jockey's Ridge State Park, the home of the largest sand dunes in the Eastern US reaching up to 100 ft. in height. It was also over 100 degrees at the time.

Zach wanted to fly the Wright flyer, but, they couldn't work it out for the next day for him.

Never enough for Zach, he played disc golf after we had walked around the Wright Brothers National  Monument and climbed the dunes for an hour in 100 plus degrees.

Day 3

Did a walk in the neighborhood and then spent the rest of the morning at Nags Head beach.

They have a major beach restoration project in progress.

In the afternoon we went to Roanoke Island. Saw Ft Raleigh National Historic  Site, not much there because it is the "lost colony"...

Then to Elizabethan Gardens.

After that we went to Manteo waterfront and had the sampler and surprisingly good dinner at Lost Colony Brewery and Cafe.

That night we went to The Lost Colony outdoor performance at the Historic Waterside Theatre.

Day 4

Got up early to drive the Cape Hatteras National Seashore to Cape Hatteras. Our 1st stop was Bodie Island Light Station.

Made a beach stop. Desolate!

Then to Hatteras Lighthouse. We're not able to climb to top because of lightening in the area.

We took our 1st ferry from Hatteras to Ocracoke.

We went to that lighthouse, as well, and then wandered about the area till time for our next ferry.

The ferry ride from Ocracoke to Cedar Point was almost 2 and a half hours. Fortunately, the expected heavy rain held off.

From Cedar Point to our overnight stop in Jacksonville, NC was another 90 miles. Basically, the whole day was a travel day.

Day 5

We drove to Airlie Gardens in Wilmington. Amazing place!

The bottle chapel was Wow!

Cathy loved all the hearts!

From there we checked into our next Airbnb. Nice place. Cathy really liked the decorating.

After that we spent a couple hours at Wrightsville Beach.

The last stop of the day was the Wilmington Cape Fear Riverfront.

The battleship USS North Carolina.

Day 6

Our 22nd anniversary!!!

We drove to Sunset Beach. Spent most of the day on the beach.

Also, made the hike to the Kindred Spirits Mailbox on Bird Island.

That evening we bought carryout our dinner at the Boundary Restaurant in Calabash, because, we didn't want to wait 1.5 hours to be seated. We took it back to our Airbnb and had our dinner there.

Day 7

We drove home. 1st we mad a side tip to Murrells Inlet to see Justin and Morgan and meet her parents before their upcoming wedding on Feb 8 next year.

It was a delightful anniversary trip!!
